In the 1800’s, many young German men emigrated illegally to the USA to avoid military service. Here is a translation of a newspaper insertion that explains the process and penalty for doing so.

Seventeen Montgomery County registrants left Monday for induction into the armed forces at the Army Main Recruiting Center in St. Louis. They were: Harland Long, Glen Garland, Floyd Andrews, George Morris, Junior Haley, Charles Andrews, Leroy Winkelmann, Floyd Wilkinson, John Dunbar, Hadley Hoffman, John Wheeler, Herman Kraft, James Bahr, Verle Naughton, Eugene Struttmann, Raymond Linke, and Earl Bratton.
